Dictionaries presented by our local Rotary Club

Mrs Burroughes visited school on Monday 4th November, to present dictionaries to our Year 5 children, on behalf of the Rotary Club. The children were very happy to have them and it was lovely that Mrs Burroughes could share some memories of her children and grandchildren attending Bressingham School. We are very grateful to Mrs Burroughes and Rotary Club for these gifts.

Celebrating different cultures - Raksha Bandhan, a Hindu festival

To celebrate different cultures, each class has enjoyed finding out about a festival in a different country. We will share what we have found about in a special assembly tomorrow.

Kestrel Class have been learning about a festival called Raksha Bandhan, which is a Hindu festival. Approximately 80% of the population of India follow the Hindu religion and there are many Hindus around the world. In this festival, traditionally there is a ceremony between siblings, but these days, this has been broadened to celebrating loyalty and support between other family members, friends and even between leaders of countries. 

We learnt some of the principles of the Hindu religion, then played a game to remember them...

After that, we wrote prayers to share with a special person from home and also for ourselves, to show support and loyalty...

Then we designed and made modern versions of a Rakhi bracelet, which we can give to our chosen person as a gift to show our loyalty and support, similar to how Hindus give bracelets to show these feelings at the Raksha Bandhan festival...

This was the first time that many of the children had sewn on a button- another life skill.

We can let others know about Raksha Bandhan, the Hindu religion and India; what will we find out about other countries tomorrow in our sharing assembly?

Enterprise

Year 6 have just started an enterprise project. The programme aims to give pupils the real life experience of starting a new business. 'Make £5 Grow' was created by Virgin Money and has benefitted over 500 schools throughout the U.K.

Pupils are split into groups and use a business loan from Virgin Money (£20) to design and develop a product or service. They will work as a team to fully develop their ideas; put their ideas in front of a judging panel for approval; carry out market research and finally sell their product. Along the way, they will improve their teamwork and communication skills; produce spreadsheets and charts showing their predicted profit margins; respond to judges feedback and evaluate their results. Watch this space for more information about the dates of the sales. Let's hope we have a new Richard Branson amongst us!

Hilltop Residential- Day 2

We all survived the night, happily!

Unfortunately, our trip to see the seals has had to be cancelled, due to the weather; we will do something else exciting on the Hilltop site instead.

In the morning, two groups did the 'Big Zipper' challenge and mountain biking:

We got wet, but had fun on the bikes and assault course, the rain didn't spoil our enjoyment!

Lunch...

This afternoon, we rose to the Tree Top Challenge! This truly was a challenge and the children and staff were challenged by the activity and the weather. Everybody completed the first, longer, section of the course, then some chose to come down to warm up, some chose the lower continuation and some the higher. It was Challenge by Choice, the motto of Hilltop. 

We are now showering and changing, before hot chocolate and quiet room time!
